| The Hall of Said Soliman, Fayoum University, hosted on Monday 11/1/2010 a lecture on "Research Schemes: Challenges and Opportunites", given by Prof Ali Al-Shafie, Executive Manager of Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), Ministry of Higher Education.

| The lecture was attended by a galaxy of diginatries, including Prof. Ahmed El-Gohary, President of Fayoum University, Prof. Mohammad El-Khaleely Barakat, Vice-President for Post-Graduate Studies and Research, as well as a number of deans, vice-deans and teaching staff members.

| The lecture was opened by Prof. Ahmed El-Gohary, who welcomed the guests and hoped that all reseachers at Fayoum University would benefit from the lecture.

| Following, Prof. Ali Al-Shafie took the floor. He talked about the Science and Technology Developemnt Fund (STDF), its establishment and budget. " The STDF is an independent public body that is engaged in financing its priority research projects; it aims to disseminate information on science and technology in Egypt and to revitalize the climate for innovation", he said.

| About the STDF's budget, he said: " Last year, the Fund's budget totaled 100 million pounds spent on research schemes. This year, on the other hand, this budget has doubled to 200 million pounds."

| "However, the STDF is facing a number of challenges, including: having no clear strategic plan and dearth of human resources," he added.

| He also presented the status of Egypt on the scientific research map, noting that Egypt is not on the list of the top developing countries in this field, which record on average more than 1000 patents per year . |
