The 36th Universities Weightlifting Championship tilted "Martyer Al Rifai" has kicked off. The two-day championship, running from April 13 to April 14, 2009, is held under the auspices of His Excellency Prof. Dr. Hani Helal, Minister of Higher Education and Research and Egyptian University Sports Federation (EUSF) President and Prof. Dr. Ahmed El Gohary, President of Fayoum University and under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al Qadi, Vice-President for Education and Students, Prof. Dr. Samir Seif Al Yazzal, Dean of Agriculture and General Coordinator of Student Activities and Mr. Hamdi Madi, head of Refereeing Commission of Egyptian Weightlifting Federation. 15 Egyptian universities and more than 80 weight lifters participated in the competition.

In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al Qadi welcomed the attendants and voiced his happiness with holding the competition for the third consecutive time at Fayoum University. "The University aims to build a new generation able to shoulder responsibility and raise the banner of progress and prosperity; this can be attained via practicing different sports activities which enhance sports spirit among people", he added. "Sport means fair competition and everlasting friendship", he said.

On behalf of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, Mr. Hamdi Madi extended cable of thanks to Fayoum University and the championship organizers saying that "This competition is among the most successful ones."

The events of the championship commenced with the technical conference which was held at Saad Nassar Hall. On the other hand, Fayoum Stadium hosted the competitions in the following weight classes; 65kg – 62 kg – 69kg -77kg – 85kg – 94 kg - 105kg – 105+kg
