Commencement of the Mandatory Internship Training (Internship Year) for PharmD and PharmD Clinical Pharmacists

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hamzawy, Dean of the Faculty,
and the supervision of Dr. Marwa Tolba, Director of the Mandatory Training (Internship) Unit for Pharmacists,
the training program for PharmD and PharmD Clinical interns began on Sunday, October 5, 2025, as follows:
First: PharmD Clinical Program:
Courses: Hospital Pharmacy – Adult General Medicine
• Elective Courses: Surgical – Neuro – Critical Care
Second: PharmD Program:
Courses: Drug Tour – Hospital and Adult General Medicine
Below is an overview of the courses:
• Drug Tour Course:
This is one of the mandatory courses, delivered through the (name of the platform). Students log in using the mobile number sent to them by the Internship Training Unit.
Each training day begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. The course runs for six weeks and includes six pillars (one per week).
Each day includes recorded educational videos prepared by lecturers from the Egyptian Drug Authority in various specialties. Daily quizzes are conducted, followed by a live Q&A session through the platform. Upon completion of each training day, the intern receives a digital certificate of completion.
Objectives of the Drug Tour Course:
1. To introduce the studies required to ensure the quality of pharmaceutical preparations according to international guidelines, emphasizing registration procedures.
2. To introduce the studies required to ensure the quality of medical devices based on international standards and highlight modern guidelines.
3. To provide an overview of bioavailability and bioequivalence studies.
4. To explain the prerequisites for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality systems in pharmaceutical factories.
5. To explain inspection procedures ensuring control over the Egyptian drug market and highlight proper storage and distribution requirements in line with global standards.
6. To introduce the general principles of pharmaceutical quality control with a focus on safety, efficacy, and evaluation methods.
7. To discuss community pharmacy practice topics such as OTC systems, drug errors, and rational antimicrobial use.
8. To provide an overview of drug information systems and the use of pharmaceutical informatics by the Egyptian Drug Authority.
9. To explain pharmacovigilance practices across pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and community pharmacies, emphasizing adverse event reporting.
• Clinical Pharmacy – Adult General Medicine Course:
Aims to develop cognitive competencies and clinical skills necessary for managing a wide range of conditions such as endocrine, renal, cardiac, and gastrointestinal diseases. Interns will undergo six weeks of on-site training under supervision to build professional experience.
• Hospital Pharmacy Course:
Conducted inside hospital pharmacies to introduce interns to the operations and services of hospital pharmacies (inpatient, outpatient, and supply units).
Interns learn about both technical and administrative functions, including drug management and patient care.
• Clinical Pharmacy – Critical Care Course:
Aims to enhance interns’ knowledge and skills in handling critical care cases and providing pharmaceutical care to patients with acute conditions such as internal, surgical, and cardiovascular diseases.
• Clinical Pharmacy – Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders Course:
Focuses on understanding, diagnosing, and managing neuropsychiatric disorders and ensuring safe and effective drug use.
Interns study pain physiology, assessment, and management and gain communication skills for patient and healthcare collaboration.
• Critical Surgical Pharmacy Course:
Trains interns to provide pharmaceutical care for patients undergoing surgical procedures, including gastrointestinal, cardiac, oncological, endocrine, urological, and ENT surgeries. Interns participate in daily clinical rounds as part of the healthcare team.
