The Wooden Artifacts of Egypt: Progress and Challenges for Dendro-Egyptology

H. ELSHERBINI , H. ABDELBASIR

We discuss the practicalities for building a tree-ring chronology for Egypt, highlighting the need for a ‘dendro-Egyptological’ approach which uses the principles of dendrochronology in combination with Egyptology and draws parallels with ‘dendroarchaeological’ research across the USA, Europe, and Japan. We also report on published dendrochronological analyses made on Egyptian artifacts so far and identify the main types of wooden resources with the highest dendrochronological potential for different time periods.
