As part of Fayoum University’s commitment to advancing support for women, Prof. Yasser Magdy Hatata, President of the University, along with Prof. Assem Fouad Al-Essawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, welcomed Dr. Dina Shokry, a member of the National Council for Women’s Health, Population, Scientific Research, and Cyber Security Committees, and Dr. Sally Zohny, Head of the Women’s Empowerment Team at the United Nations Population Fund, to inaugurate the "Safe Woman Unit" at Moustafa Hassan University Hospital for Pediatric Medicine and Surgery.

The event was attended by Prof. Naglaa El-Sherbiny, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Ghada El-Gallad, Dean of Faculty of Nursing and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Prof. Mohamed Safaa, Director General of University Hospitals, Prof. Heba Hussein, Director of the Safe Women Unit, Prof. Mona Salem, National Coordinator of the Central Coordination Unit for Combating Violence against Women, Dr. Amal Philip, Health Advisor to the Unit, Dr. Michel Youssef, Medical Coordinator, Dr. Iman Ahmed Zaky, Rapporteur of the National Council for Women in Fayoum, Prof. Nouhair El-Shoushany, Director of the Center for Combating Violence against Women, along with other professionals and stakeholders, on Monday, February 10, 2025. Prof. Hatata emphasized that the establishment of the Safe Women Unit is part of the university’s broader societal and developmental responsibilities. He highlighted that the university’s mission goes beyond just academic education, aiming to serve the local community by providing comprehensive services to the residents of Fayoum.

For his part, Prof. Asem Al-Essawy, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and the guests inaugurated the "Safe Women Unit at Mustafa Hassan University Hospital for Pediatric Medicine and Surgery" in the presence of a number of medical and administrative staff.

Prof. Assem Al-Essawy explained that the goal of establishing the Safe Women Unit is to create a safe and supportive environment for women to provide the necessary consultations to enable them to face the challenges they face.
|
He added that the unit will be part of the services provided by the hospital, where medical staff will deal with cases of violence confidentially. The unit will also provide a number of services including psychological, medical and legal support, in addition to organizing workshops and training courses to raise awareness among women and girls and inform them of how to confront domestic and societal violence in all its forms. It will also help provide the necessary medical support.

Dr. Dina Shoukry expressed her happiness with this important step, stressing that the unit will be a model to be emulated in providing comprehensive support to abused women in Fayoum Governorate and its centers. She added that the unit will contribute to enhancing women's culture and empowering them to confront domestic and societal violence.

Dr. Sally Zohny, Head of the Women's Empowerment Team at the United Nations Population Fund, said that the United Nations Population Fund, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Population and the National Council for Women, established safe women's units in universities to raise awareness in confronting all forms of violence to which women are exposed.

Dr. Mona Salem, National Coordinator of the Coordination Unit to Combat Violence Against Women at the National Council for Women, thanked the university for the fruitful cooperation and support in establishing the unit and praised the role of Fayoum University in providing services to women, whether educational or medical.

Dr. Amal Philip presented the role of the Safe Women Unit in providing medical and psychological support to women and girls who are exposed to violence and referral to other service sectors such as the National Council for Women's Complaints Office and women's hosting and guidance homes.

Mrs. Eman Zaky indicated that the unit is the result of joint cooperation between Fayoum University and the National Council for Women to provide a safe haven for women who have been subjected to violence through the Women's Complaints Office at the Council, and cases are studied and referred to the Safe Women Unit to provide a package of services for each case.

Prof. Heba Hussein stressed that the unit will be a haven for women who are exposed to violence in all its forms, and will work to provide all the necessary capabilities to ensure the provision of health and psychological services.
